unfortunately we have no choice but to give it a miss - only five of us could make it, we'd have had to leave at a really difficult time, ending up back in helsinki at 3am and starting the last rehearsal before gloria the next day. sorry about that. we are trying to sort out a gig in that area later in the summer..

we played four songs last night at stockholm diskotek (25 minutes). johannes came down from tampere with the accordion, that never got used, i managed to get a huge pump-organ to the venue with the help of max and joona, that didn't get used either. thankyou, however, to the people who decided to come down to the event even in the face of the recent eurovision songcontest winners lordi playing at a big square. apparently it was stock full. and our gratitude to elise, who did her best to turn the evening around for everybody concerned (and kept the bands informed when no one else did).

a show at semifinal in helsinki with preesens and dive has been confirmed for the 21st of july.. in addition to working out a sensible way of bringing together the five or six finished parts of "caroline is a state of mind", we've been adding accordion and violin to an old(ish) song called "kiss the". never being fully happy with the emo-tendencies of this tune, we are presently working on adding balearic and four tet-esque rhythmic elements to it. on top of this, tuukka has a rather fetching tangerine dream fashioned hook for the string-section. more later.. see you at the young future benefit at stockholm diskotek, providing you're prepared to cough up the minimum of 16 euro to actually get in that is.. more info below

we're playing a charity concert on friday the 26th may..the club is called "young future" and it will be at stockholm diskotek starting at 6.30pm. other acts include soma, poor seamus, leijonamieli, kemopetrol and WAX - real time orchestra, tickets are 16/20e advance, 18/22e from tiketti and 25e at the door. the organiser's website has a badly spelled short description of us. visit it here! the new song, "caroline/chlorine", is taking shape gradually and i've put up an ancient live-version of it in the download section, as well as an as-yet-unmastered "this just won't do" that we recorded during the studio sessions last april. unfortunately, joel can't make it to the stockholm disco show so we're desperately looking for someone to fill in for him as soon as possible. truth be told, the gig is in eleven days and we haven't even started rehearsing yet; it's been nearly two months since we all last played those songs together.. anyway, it's just a short set at stockholm (35 minutes), so we should be able to pull it off, playing all the fastest numbers as fast as we can. should be fun

may9. "carolinekakachlorine" in progress and rehearsals beginning again

(are we still on a hiatus?) we started up again nearly two weeks ago when johannes last came to helsinki. just him & me & tuukka and essi but still - we started on a new one presently entitled "listen to your genitals"; our first experiment in reggae, surf and sadcore. i felt quite pleased with it at the time, but who knows? it could be shit. we started on "caroline" again on sunday and finally, after six years working on this song, it's actually going somewhere. the second verse will have some truly satanic neo-classical violins and the whole structure will be supported by a beat from a casio vl-tone, one of which you can experiment with here

no time for breaks, apr14

we've gone back to the studio again for a few days to re-record 'not a whisper' and 'hushsuh' and one of the new ones; tentatively entitled 'this just won't do'. this demo has taken nearly six months to record and i have five days to finish it. we're working very hard to make the deadline and i've spent 15 hours there today recording guitars, violins, metallophones, keyboards and vocals. but the sleeve-desing plans for the rec are coming along well so there's one problem less to worry about now. looks like it will involve cows..

hiatus ; apr5 3006

we're going to take some time off now to rename the band and write some new material - we've been pushing too hard for results and at some point it started feeling like a chore. there will probably be a new gig in late april / early may before gloria in june anyway but until then we'll just try to take it easy for a bit (which is a nice idea, but near impossible as i have two weeks to finish mastering the 10 / 11 songs we recorded in a studio late last year). thankyouthankyou to the people who came to see us live at uniq on saturday.. the atmosphere was great and we didn't really expect such a good reception from people. plus i felt nervous for the first time in ages which is always a good thing. probably one of the most bizarre places we ever played, and that goes for the afterparty too. joel's other band, proxima centauri, are playing with dom andra tonight (wednesday) at turkoosi, so anyone interested in seeing emokids running headlong into drum-sets to the accompaniment of hardcore should make the effort and come along; tickets are two euros and the first band starts playing at around ten pm

march24, 2006, dismal gestas

started the mastering for the record yesterday. we're using four-track cassette, bringing up the volume, re-recording some vocals, adding a couple of instruments here & there, hopefully finished by may. as i bounced the eight songs we have worth releasing, tuukka wrote texts for the sleeves, ghosts of the final product here (drawings, for the time being at least, not included). 6. linja was a good time for us again, someone told me the best part was seeing joel freak out with his guitar while otto sat next to him smoking a cigarette, looking bored. playing the new one, tentatively "this just won't do", was a bit worrying to start with, but i reckon it went well in the end..

the date of the webcast show has been set for friday 17th which is just over a week away. it starts at around two pm, unless i can get the powers that be to change it to something more humane later in the evening. unlikely. meanwhile, here are some photos from tampere taken by matto and kindly censored and uploaded by max.

tampere 22.2 with idolae & sweeties (march 3rd)

i woke up on thursday with writing on my face, this due to somewhat of a tradition of defacing anyone who goes to sleep first at kaisa's & santeri's flat. getting to the venue on time seemed the hardest part on wednesday but we managed to meet up just 45 minutes late for soundcheck (which ended up taking us a ridiculous 2hours and 15 minutes to do) and sat waiting to play for hours on end as our friends drank red wine etc. the first band to play was idolae, postpunk screaming guitars and a singer that sounded a bit like eddie vedder (a good thing, if you consider the fact that a slightly inebriated middle-aged man took one look at me during soundcheck and said "hector would be jealous"). sweeties were on next playing angular punk in their matching military costumes. cool stuff as far as i could tell.. feeling horribly nervous i went for a walk back and forth up and down the road listening to johnny mathis four tet and life without buildings. when i got back they had dusty springfield playing on the p.a. and i felt deadly calm at the prospect of standing up on stage, which is strange as i'm usually a wreck for the first fifteen minutes. we started with a soft violin led "not a whisper" and things went smoothly from there, apart from some technical problems on my part due to the fact that i only own broken instruments.

ho hum, the tampere show is going to be interesting, our convoy will consist of a van and two cars. nine bandmembers, two drivers, a mixing guy and some friends. and lots of instruments, luckily no drums this time hurrah, & a chap called johannes from idolae is going to play saxophone with us there. he's coming to helsinki this weekend, so we'll have him play that and some accordion on the studiowork we've immersed ourselves in since the end of november. the gig is now two-and-a-half-weeks-away and we're all a bit nervous cuz we last played live at the arse-end of 2005.arg

calculated the approximate length that this thing is shaping up to be and noticed that 72 minutes might be a bit much. so maybe trim it round the edges. essi, saara and iina are coming in to do violins and trumpet today, hope everything goes smoothly.. this record is presently using 49.8 Gigabytes of disk space.

Jan22nd : Kraut-rock stock, just add water

things have been mighty quiet recently. but nothing has stopped, new songs are being written in between holidays. we're mixing something we recorded before christmas, eleven songs, seventyfive minutes (probably), with a working title of "tall poppies", will include the things we recorded in a warehouse-shaped film studio, random stuff picked up at rehearsalrooms etc. and emily even reads a poem! songs will hopefully run in this order -

the line up will most likely expand over the next few weeks from six members to ten when we start rehearsals with a new bass / accordion player, two violins and a cello. there'll never be room for us on a stage again..
